The Music School

There is a vibrant and thriving musical environment at The Hall. The atmosphere of inclusive, purposeful music-making in the school is greatly respected and the majority of boys choose to become involved in the wider musical life of the school as well as within weekly class lessons.

Instrumental and vocal tuition is first class, delivered by visiting professionals and there is a comprehensive programme of ensembles that supports curriculum work. Many of the high profile events during a school year have music at their core and there are correspondingly impressive standards expected and achieved at all levels.

• Senior School & Middle School Concerts provide opportunities for our wide range of orchestras and music groups to give formal performances
• The Hall Outstanding Musician Competition; the overall winner in the Senior School receives as a prize, the opportunity to record professionally in our Music Technology studio
• Chamber Music Masterclasses and Festival (Summer Term) for all the string ensembles
• Informal Concerts; all boys in Years 4 to 8 have the opportunity to play a solo piece in the half-termly concerts
• Music Scholars’ Informal Concert; the final chance for prospective music scholars to perform their pieces before their scholarship auditions
• Jazz Concert at the iconic Pizza Express, Soho in which all the jazz bands and their teachers perform together
• Our Chapel Choir sing services in St Paul’s Cathedral, Southwark Cathedral, and visit colleges and chapels of Cambridge and Oxford Universities.
• Band Night at The Hall’s Summer Festival at Wilf Slack Playing Fields
• The annual Gala Concert at the Cadogan Hall, held in the Spring Term to celebrate and showcase the musical talent across all three schools
• The annual Big Sing combines communal singing around the yearly theme, alongside a very competitive house singing competition!
• Boys in the Senior School have the opportunity to go on international tours, including a concert tour and outreach programme in South Africa.
