January marked another memorable Enrichment Day at The Hall – one of several held each year to extend learning beyond the classroom and give boys the chance to experience history, culture and enterprise first-hand. Days like these capture something essential about life at the school: boys approach every opportunity with curiosity, energy and real vigour.
Across London and beyond, each year group embarked on experiences carefully designed to deepen understanding while sparking imagination.
Year 4: Medicine and London Through Time
Year 4 visited Borough to explore the evolution of medicine and the changing face of London. At the Old Operating Theatre Museum, boys discovered how surgery was performed before anaesthetics and antiseptics – developments now so familiar that it is easy to forget how revolutionary they were. Some listened in fascinated disbelief while others looked on with slightly less enthusiasm as they heard vivid accounts of procedures from the past!
In the adjoining Herb Garret, pupils encountered curious remedies from centuries past and even tried their hand at making pills, offering a practical glimpse into historical medical practice.
The day continued with a guided walk along the Thames, taking in landmarks including HMS Belfast, the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. Under clear blue skies, the boys enjoyed lunch outdoors before swapping activities – a full day that brought history vividly to life.
Year 5: Faith, Community and Giving Back
Year 5 spent their Enrichment Day exploring Jewish life and the importance of community – one of The Hall’s school values. Welcomed warmly by Rabbi Cohen at St John’s Wood Synagogue, pupils revisited key features of synagogue worship and asked thoughtful questions, demonstrating both engagement and respect.
In the afternoon, boys learned about Norwood’s charitable work before preparing Purim gift bags to share with residents in Norwood homes. The experience blended learning with meaningful action, reminding pupils that understanding and supporting others lies at the heart of community life.
Year 6: Discovering Roman Britain
Year 6 travelled back nearly two millennia to Roman Verulamium, modern-day St Albans. At the museum, pupils handled artefacts linked to daily Roman life and explored galleries through an interactive treasure hunt.
Out in Verulamium Park, they encountered remains of Roman engineering still visible today, including the hypocaust heating system beneath a villa mosaic floor. The final stop, the remarkably preserved Roman bathhouse at Welwyn, allowed boys to understand how bathing formed an important part of Roman social life. It was a day rich in discovery.
Year 7: Creativity in the Capital
Year 7 immersed themselves in London’s vibrant street art scene, touring Shoreditch with expert guides including the artist Subdude. Boys learned about paste-ups, stencil work, tagging and mural painting while exploring ever-changing artworks across the area.
Blessed with rare winter sunshine, the groups enjoyed the colour and creativity of the city, with a well-earned hot chocolate stop along the way. The visit revealed how creativity is woven into the urban landscape they encounter every day.
Year 8: Enterprise Takes Flight
Back at school, Year 8 put their entrepreneurial instincts to work in the British Airways Enterprise Challenge, led by Inspirational Learning. Working in teams, pupils created their own airline concepts, developing branding, customer experiences, ticket pricing and marketing strategies before pitching their ideas to judges.
Boys designed cabin interiors to perform safety videos and presentations were delivered with characteristic Hall confidence and flair. Winning team Diversifly will go on to compete against other schools later this year – a testament to their creativity and teamwork.
Days like these illustrate why there is rarely a quiet moment at The Hall. Whether uncovering ancient civilisations, engaging with faith and community, exploring artistic expression or testing entrepreneurial skill, boys seize each opportunity with an indefatigable enthusiasm.
