Senior school preparation at The Hall is thoughtful, measured and tailored to each child. As a prep school, we prepare boys thoroughly and confidently for 11+ and 13+ entry, with a proven track record of senior school placements across leading London day schools and UK-wide boarding schools. This approach gives boys time to grow in confidence, mature academically, and develop a love of learning within a supportive pastoral environment that lays the foundations for future success.
Personalised guidance begins with an individual conversation in Year 1 with the Head of Junior School and continues with tailored planning meetings in Year 5 with the Head of the Middle School and Head of Year 5, supported by our Senior School Liaison, who provides dedicated guidance through the application process and maintains strong relationships with a wide network of senior school heads.
“Families have many options at 7+, 11+ and 13+, and we understand that choice can feel daunting. Our role is to guide each family carefully, preparing boys for 11+ and 13+ and ensuring they move on to the right senior school where they will truly thrive.”
– Richard Gordon, Head of Middle School
Each year, our boys progress to a wide range of leading London day schools and UK-wide boarding schools, with many securing scholarships and exhibition awards. Around two-thirds of our boys choose to remain at The Hall through Years 7 and 8, benefiting from senior-school level teaching, enrichment, and leadership opportunities before progressing at 13+.
Year 1 – Pathways Explained
In Year 1, parents are invited to meet individually with the Head of Junior School to explore future pathways. These early conversations provide clarity about 7+, 11+ and 13+ options, assessment timelines, and the academic and emotional considerations of each route.
We believe early childhood should not be overshadowed by premature exam preparation. For most boys, the 11+ and 13+ pathways offer the strongest and most appropriate route, with a proven track record of success demonstrated by our Leaver’s Destinations.
Year 5 – Personalised Planning
Formal senior school guidance begins in the Spring Term of Year 5 with a general information meeting led by the Headmaster, followed by an individual consultation with the Head of Middle School and Head of Year 5.
By this stage, we know each boy exceptionally well. Parents are reassured by our track record of senior school results. As a prep school, boys have the chance to explore a wide range of options over time – ensuring they choose the right senior school for their strengths and interests, at the right time.
Senior School Liaison
Our Senior Deputy Head additionally provides personalised support throughout the application process from year 6 onwards. Working closely with the Headmaster, maintains strong relationships with a wide network of senior school heads, helping families navigate choices confidently and succeed in their applications.
At The Hall, senior school preparation goes hand in hand with wellbeing. Our pastoral support ensures boys feel supported academically, emotionally, and socially throughout their journey.
