JS STEM Week

Year 1 pupils became chemists during a soap-making workshop this week. Following a talk on how wide-reaching and varied a career in science could be, whether helping to keep plane engines flying safely, producing medicines, or helping to improve the quality of the air that we breathe, the Year 1s worked with some real-life Scientists in a workshop. Each mini-chemist was provided with their own lab coat, goggles and gloves, as well as their own set of equipment and ingredients as they learned about the soap-making process, and the technical names and functions of each chemical ingredient involved in making the perfect hand soap. The boys experimented with changing viscosity by increasing the amount of salt and decided what colours to use to make their soap shimmer and shine.
