I would like to thank the many of you who made meaningful contributions to the Senior School Development Project (SSDP) and I’m delighted to report that, with the exception of usual snagging items, the project is now complete. We are extremely pleased with the results!
The Senior School has been upgraded and modernised. Not only is the Wathen Hall now a state-of-the-art sports and drama space, but the block benefits from additional specialist IT and science facilities and three additional classrooms. Every classroom has been adapted for modern teaching methods, with studios for The Arts (Art & Pottery, Design Tech and Drama) streamlined and refurbished. In completing this development the governors aimed to future-proof the entire school, with many of these space and flexibility benefits already being felt in the Middle and Junior schools as well. It has been important to the governors to achieve a 21st-century building specifically designed to complement the modern-day teaching and learning that is offered at The Hall.
The campaign for the Senior School Development Project raised a fantastic £3.3m thanks to the wonderful generosity of current and past parents and alumni. At the end of the last school year we bid farewell to Chris and Sue Godwin, with our thanks for all they gave to The Hall and our best wishes for their retirements. We had established The Godwin Fund as a way to give to The Hall in thanks and recognition of what Chris and Sue achieved. Thank you to all those who donated; over £100,000 was raised in this public phase of the fundraising, an enormous credit to Chris and Sue and their contribution to the school.

There is an incredibly strong and generous history of giving at The Hall, embodied in a range of actions across the decades, from kind former headmasters pulling in refugee boys ‘off the streets’ of North London to give them a Hall education, to the loan of country homes and estates in the war years for the evacuation of pupils, to financial support for various post-war reconstruction projects between 1945 and 1952. Later fundraising for building and remodelling projects such as The Wathen Hall and the Centenary Buildings supported the development of specialist physical spaces for the broad and enriching subject provision for which The Hall has become renowned. In the more recent past, after 24 years’ association with the Hall, Kirsty Anderson, Head of the Junior School, diverted generous parent donations for her leaving gift into a Bursary award, enabling us to support families of modest means whose son might not otherwise be able to enjoy a Hall experience.
Through the decades, the dedication and gratitude of Hall families and alumni for the school has been reflected in countless gifts of time, talent and funds. Our current initiative aims to raise funds for a major re-development of the senior school site, enabling modern and flexible teaching and learning spaces for our older pupils, as well as funding bursary awards for ten talented boys within the school at any one time. These two strands of our fundraising align in our aim to provide Hall students transformational learning opportunities as they prepare to take flight into their futures.

Due to the current school closures and COVID-19 health and safety measures, regrettably we have had to postpone the start of the demolition works scheduled for July 2020. The Governors will be monitoring the situation with a view to re-starting the Space to Soar development work as soon as feasible.
In recent years significant investment has been made in the refurbishment of our Junior School buildings as well the significant upgrade of our playing fields and facilities in Finchley.
The Hall remains one of the few independent preparatory schools in London. We have been able to keep a step ahead of other similar schools and retain our focus on the individual child as a result of this independence. But it does mean that we cannot rely on the financial support of a senior school, a large organisation or indeed an established endowment for a project of this sort.
The investment for the Space to Soar project is around £14 million. The funding will come from a combination of three sources; revenues and accumulated reserves, loan financing and philanthropic support. We need to raise at least £4 million from our community to be able to go ahead with the project.

Making a legacy pledge to The Hall is quite straightforward. It can be done either when making a will for the first time or, by adding a codicil to an existing will.
In 2016 we launched The Wathen Society to recognise and thank any member of The Hall community who chooses to include the school in their will. The list of members is not published but we will make sure that they are kept in touch with the school and have regular opportunities to meet the Headmaster, Governors and of course our current boys.
If you would like to become a member of our legacy society or receive further information about making a legacy pledge, please contact development@hallschool.co.uk. All enquiries will be treated in the strictest confidence.
Each year, as the Year 8 pupils come to the end of their time at the school, we invite their parents to consider donating the remaining balance of their £1000 registration deposit as a leaving gift to The Hall
Since the start of this programme in 2015, our parents have been extremely generous and over £130,000 has been raised in this way making a substantial contribution to our bursary and development funds.

The Hall is committed to ensuring that boys of talent and promise can access a Hall education regardless of financial circumstances. The school funds up to ten bursary places at any one time, offering means‑tested awards of up to 100% of fees, with one or two fully funded places typically available for entry into Year 4 each year.
Our bursary programme is an essential part of The Hall’s mission to broaden access and support families who could not otherwise consider independent education. These awards are transformational, enabling boys to benefit from The Hall’s academic standards, specialist teaching and rich pastoral environment.
Your Support Helps To:
This vital provision is sustained through the school’s own commitment and through the generosity of parents, alumni and friends. This essential support helps us continue offering life‑changing opportunities to boys who would otherwise be unable to join our community.
How You Can Help
By making a donation today, you help open the door to opportunities for a boy who simply needs a chance. Every pound brings us closer to ensuring that no promising pupil is held back by financial hardship. Your support, whatever the amount, makes a genuine and lasting difference.
